Ernesto Guevara ( Rosario ( Argentina ), May 14 or 14th of June 1928 – La Higuera ( Bolivia ), October 9 1967 ), better known as Che Guevara , was an Argentine Marxist revolutionary and Cuban guerrilla leader . The nickname Che (in the Spanish always with one definite article : " el Che ", so "the Che") was given to him during his stay in Guatemala. In Latin America, the cry “Che” is used to get someone's attention; it can be loosely translated as friend or buddy.
Che Guevara was a member of Fidel Castro 's revolutionary 26th of July Movement , which came to power through a revolution in Cuba in 1959. After holding several posts in the new Cuban government, Guevara left Cuba in 1966 to spread the revolution in other countries, first in the Democratic Republic of Congo and later on Bolivia . On October 8, 1967, Guevara was arrested during a raid by the C.I.A organized military operation of the Bolivian army. Although the CIA wanted to keep him alive for questioning, Guevara was executed the day after his capture. In July 1997, the remains of Guevara and six of his comrades were transferred to Cuba and buried with military honors in a mausoleum in October 1997. Santa Clara .
